Book Review: The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp

I guess I enjoyed the book.

I first started reading this months ago when I heard there has been a movie adaptation for this one. I got curious. However, I didn’t even get half done with the book. I got bored and I was like hurrying up all Sutter’s narration of his fun and wildness, not to mention, his being a jerk. I can’t seem to connect with him. Maybe that’s because I’m a girl? Then one day, I started the book all over again just to have something to do on a usual unproductive day.

I didn’t like Sutter. He’s a jerk and I hate that Aimee fell for someone like him. Their love story isn’t ideal also. I get that Aimee needs to speak up sometimes and thanks to Sutter she was able to later in the story. However, Sutter forgot to teach her to control, leading her to, of course you know, not knowing when to stop. But even with this, Sutter sees no wrong. I am not sure who’s my favorite character in the story. Obviously, not Sutter.

Despite all my frustrations over Sutter, the book kept me flipping page after page. I couldn’t stop reading it because I was looking forward for a dynamic development on Sutter and his feelings for Aimee. And yes, there was. However, there’s almost no hint of his character developing until the last part.

I didn’t like the ending. I know he’s a jerk and he knows he has no future to give to Aimee, but he can make up for it. He can’t let go of her just because he’s no good. Not now that he realized he loves Aimee more than he ever loved anyone.

Still, the book is entertaining enough to have me kept reading it until the end.
