Film Review: [Japan] A Story of Yonosuke

I just found out about this movie accidentally. I can't exactly remember how but for sure I was spazzing over Joo Won then unintentionally saw the trailer. I was skeptical about watching it at first because I got turned off with the torrent file size which was almost 4gb. Thank God, I was bored enough to continue downloading.

It's a story about a guy who's got a funny name, Yokomichi Yonosuke (I guess that's funny there). He came from the countryside to Tokyo, in order to study for college. He met different people and made friends. After 2 decades or so, these people reminisce about Yonosuke.

The flashbacks are presented uniquely in this movie, reminds me of The Great Gatsby. Instead of the main character who reminisces his journey, it's the other character who does it. In this one, not only one but many people recall their story about Yonosuke. It's a movie that makes you reflect about yourself afterwards. It makes you think if you have someone like Yonosuke, someone whose plainness only adds up to your love and admiration for him. And when you realize you have, you feel blessed and grateful to befriend with such people.

One thing I also really like about the movie is the romance. I always hated the awkward stage in every relationship but in this one, it became the main point of their lovestory. And with the fact that Yonosuke first got attracted to some older woman before Shoko, showed how much of a boy he was, immature and naive. I like Shoko so much. She's rich and very much, inexperienced. I can't say she's a spoiled brat but she's very innocent and cheery. She takes a liking at Yonosuke and always clings onto him. She's the kind of character you'll easily get annoyed with but that didn't happen to me. I adore her courage. She goes all out of what she's feeling. She makes friend with him, laughs at his innocence, asks him for a date, goes to his hometown and even introduces him to her elite family. She likes him, and that's it. She isn't calculative. His ordinariness doesn't even affect her feelings for him. So pure.

I did enjoy watching the movie. I didn't realize it's an almost 3-hour movie. Not surprise though because the movie has lots of pretty subtle moments, a Japan thing, maybe. But thank God, I din't get bored at all.
